Japan is an innovative country, leading in many technological fields, but its state the system is so bureaucratic that it previously required businesses to provide official documents on floppy disks and CDs.
In 2022, Japan's Minister of Digital Affairs Tao Kono called for an end to this outdated practice – the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry was one of the first to make the transition and announced that after 2024 it would no longer require businesses to submit data on floppy disks (the same applies to CDs) in accordance with 34 regulations.
Complicating the transition is the large number of regulations that require the use of floppy disks, CDs or mini-discs for filing documents and need to be updated – Kono's team during the audit found about 1,900 such protocols in departments covering such key industries , such as utilities, mining, aircraft or weapons manufacturing, etc.
At the same time, the process can be speeded up by the lack of floppies (Sony, the last major manufacturer, stopped selling them in 2011) or by limiting the size of the files they can hold.
As recently as 2022, there was a fairly active floppy disk business in the United States, receiving orders from all over the world – from airlines, medical institutions and industrial plants.
