Intel Xeon Emerald Rapids processors introduced. Models with 64 cores will have to compete with AMD's 96-core monsters

Basically this is just an update to Sapphire Rapids

Today Intel introduced Meteor Lake mobile consumer processors, which, judging by the first tests, are, to put it mildly, not impressive. But today the company announced the fifth generation of Xeon Scalable server CPUs — Emerald Rapids.

The new processors replace Sapphire Rapids, although the latter came out less than a year ago. In the case of new products, it is more correct to talk about an update than about a completely new generation. In particular, the number of cores has increased slightly — from 56 to 64 — and the Golden Cove architecture was replaced by Raptor Cove, which is very close to it. The technical process has not changed at all — it's still the same 10nm Intel 7.

Thanks to the updated architecture, the new CPUs received significantly more cache memory, support for RAM with an effective frequency of up to 5600 MHz, and on average, according to Intel, performance increased by 21%. This, recall, is with an increase in the number of cores by 14%.

They also promise 36% better energy efficiency, but similar promises for Meteor Lake have not yet been confirmed by tests. However, IBM and Google are already actively praising the new CPUs, announcing a 2.7-fold increase in query throughput on the finished platform and a two-fold increase in performance in deep learning models.

Despite the fact that the CPU was announced only now, we have already seen tests of new products in Geekbench, and there they could not catch up with the current AMD Epyc CPUs even with the same number of cores, but the Genoa line offers, in particular,  96-core processors.
