The European Union is actively preparing for the introduction of the next, 14th package of sanctions against Russia. As reported by Bloomberg, citing informed sources, restrictive measures will cover several main areas.
One of the key measures may be a ban for EU countries on the use of the Bank of Russia Financial Messaging System (SPFS), which replaced the SWIFT system. According to Bloomberg, as of January 2024, the SPFS was already operating in 20 countries, including Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, allowing Russia to continue banking operations bypassing sanctions.
In the information space, the possibility of banning four Russian media outlets from broadcasting in the EU is being considered. Also, European parties and public organizations may be prohibited from receiving any types of funding related to Russia, which is associated with preparations for the elections to the European Parliament in June of this year.
In addition, according to Bloomberg, the EU is studying a ban on imports of helium, manganese ore and rare earth elements from Russia. About a dozen companies, including from China, the UAE and Turkey, as well as individuals, may be included in the new sanctions list.
A ban on entry into EU ports is also expected for 11 Russian ships involved in breaking the sanctions blockade. In addition, the EU is considering the possibility of banning the re-export of Russian LNG through EU ports.
