Connection will begin in 2024

The MTS operator conducted successful pre-commercial tests of XGS-PON fixed Internet technology with data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s on its backbone network in Moscow. The company's press service spoke about this.

As noted in the press service, such indicators are «ten times higher than the current home Internet speeds in Russia». Testing of equipment at a communication center in Moscow confirmed the technical readiness of MTS to connect apartments in new residential complexes to ultra-fast Internet in 2024, subject to an agreement with developers.

MTS explained:

XGS-PON — one of the most modern technologies for Internet access via fiber optic with data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s for each subscriber, which is 10 times higher than in networks using current technology — GPON. XGS-PON will allow you to connect modern Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) routers to the optical network with a wireless connection at speeds from 5 to 10 Gbit/s.

As the operator emphasizes, on the XGS-PON network, a file with a movie in UHD quality with a capacity of 8 GB is downloaded in 20–25 seconds, regardless of the number of services and gadgets used in the apartment.
