In Russia, they invented and manufactured a motor-wheel for electric vehicles, which is approximately 25% smaller than its analogues, and also 20% more economical, as described by Professor of the Department of Electric Drive, Mechatronics and Electromechanics of the SUSU Polytechnic Institute, Doctor of Technical Sciences , Professor Sergey Gandzha.

«The problem was that all existing motor-wheels have large dimensions and weight or a limited range of control of motion parameters. This leads to increased consumption of the battery installed in the vehicle. In addition, they are difficult to use in racing cars with a wide range of speeds and torques. And we, together with Candidate of Technical Sciences Ivan Chuiduk and a group of young scientists, for the first time in Russia, managed to solve the problem of the rotation speed range with approximately 25% smaller dimensions of the motor-wheel», — told by Sergey Gandzha.

He explained that the reduction in dimensions was made possible by the planetary double-crown gearbox built into the motor-wheel, which was developed by Sergei Kondakov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Wheeled and Tracked Vehicles. Together, scientists created a special design for the inductor of a combined excitation electric motor, in which powerful permanent magnets and an excitation winding were combined for the first time.

«Magnets have reduced the volume and weight of the motor, and the winding allows you to expand the range of control of motion parameters by changing the magnetic flux. The design made it possible to reduce overall losses and increase efficiency by 5–7% compared to foreign analogues», — he added.

Such motor-wheels can be used in the manufacture of passenger and commercial electric vehicles for both general industrial and special purposes: «As for commercial electric vehicles with a carrying capacity of up to 10 tons, the use of such wheels in the design will allow achieving significant saving effect due to freeing up the engine compartment and placing the traction electric drive in the volume of the wheel disk. This allows, on the one hand, to increase comfort for the driver due to the placement of service systems, and on the other — place a larger volume of electrical energy storage and thereby increase the mileage without recharging. Based on the sum of all factors, cars with such wheels consume their battery power up to 20% more economically and increase the driving distance from a single charge by 30%.
