Figure has announced a commercial agreement under which its first humanoid robot will be work at the only BMW plant in the United States. The automaker is not disclosing exactly how many Figure 01 robots it will employ. It is unknown exactly what tasks the robots will perform. Figure supports the creation of general purpose humanoid robots as opposed to specialized mechanical assistants in traditional industry and science.

It is likely that entry-level programs involve standard manufacturing tasks: moving boxes, picking and placing, unloading and loading – human workers are becoming increasingly difficult to find in the United States and other developed countries. Figure expects to release its first commercial work within the year.
The first robots will be received by early Figure partners, such as BMW. The company has signed up additional clients, but does not disclose their names. Figure will likely announce each one individually to keep the news flowing throughout the year. Figure received investment from Intel last year.
Figure focuses on creating a dexterous, human-like hand for manipulation. This is a logical approach to developing a universal humanoid form factor. The legs are just as important, if not more so, for maneuvering certain tasks.
