Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is artificial intelligence that can solve any an intellectual task that a person can perform.
Meta is reorganizing its artificial intelligence teams as it joins the ranks of companies that have committed to creating general artificial intelligence. According to Zuckerberg, they will increasingly focus on AI research, so these changes will help “accelerate” it and ultimately improve the “metaverse”.
Meta currently has two teams dedicated to artificial intelligence research: the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team, created back in 2013, and a new one focused solely on generative AI experiences for users. The changes, Zuckerberg says, will “bring closer” both divisions and are aimed at expanding them.
Meta’s CEO did not specify exactly how many employees will be added to the teams. The company cut more than 20,000 jobs in 2022.
In a video posted by Threads, Zuckerberg said the changes will support their “long-term goals of building artificial general intelligence, responsibly open access to it, and making it accessible and useful to everyone in everyday life.” < /p>

“We are building a huge amount of infrastructure,” Zuckerberg wrote. “At the end of this year we will have ~350 thousand Nvidia H100.”
Analysts at Raymond James estimate that Nvidia sells H100 chips for between $25,000 and $30,000, and they could fetch more than $40,000 on eBay. If Meta paid the minimum, it would spend about $9 billion.

In its third-quarter financial report, Meta said total expenses for 2024 will be between $94 billion and $99 billion, driven in part by expansion in computing.
“In terms of investment priorities, artificial intelligence will be our largest area of investment in 2024, both in engineering and computing resources,” Zuckerberg said during a call with analysts.
At the same time, Zuckerberg made it clear that he has no plans to abandon the metaverse, which, according to him, also benefits from the progress of AI.
“The two main parts of our vision—artificial intelligence and the metaverse—are connected,” he wrote.
Since 2019, the tech giant has lost $47 billion in its Reality Labs division, spanning VR and Meta operations in the metaverse.
“I think that before the end of the decade, many people will interact frequently with artificial intelligence throughout the day using smart glasses like the ones we create from Ray Ban,” Zuckerberg said.
