After 7 years, Sony fought off a $500 million lawsuit over DualSense gamepads

Sometimes legal battles can drag on for many years. The Sony team is still recording another victory

The story of a lawsuit against Sony has been going on since 2017. The reason was the DualSense gamepads: the technology of the company Genuine Enabling Technology is allegedly being copied.

In 2024, the court found Sony not guilty. Genuine's lawyers argued that Sony used the company's technology to organize data exchange between PlayStation and DualSense consoles (allegedly, without its patented technology, Sony's solution simply would not work).

Sony argued that the company failed to provide sufficient evidence that a certain component in its controllers was “structurally equivalent” to the logic circuits presented in the Genuine Enabling Technology patent.

The amount of the claim was estimated at $500 million, but now Sony has won – the case is (at least for now) closed.

As noted in gamesindustry.biz , Genuine Enabling Technology came to Nintendo with a similar lawsuit. The court then ruled in favor of Nintendo, but then the appeal court overturned it and the case continued.
