A digital twin of the AI-222-25 aircraft engine has been created in Russia

Thousands of parts that make up the serial AI-222-25 engine were digitized during the work

The United Engine Corporation, part of Rostec, has completed the development of a digital twin of the AI-222-25 aircraft engine for the Yak-130 training aircraft. This was reported by the press service of the state corporation. 

As the developers noted, the technology will make it possible to improve the characteristics of the power plant and design components of new engine modifications with less time and material costs. In addition, the digital twin will reduce the amount of testing required to certify the unit.

The creation of the digital twin was carried out in several stages. During the work, thousands of parts that make up the serial AI-222-25 engine were digitized.  The double is already used to assess the impact of changes that occur during operation on the state of the engine structure.

Then the developers created individual elements of the modernized version of the AI-222-25, which is currently being worked on. Gas-dynamic models of units were built and refined, a structure was developed, and formats for data transfer from one model to another were determined. The designers also developed complex computer models of the gas generator of the modernized engine – thermomechanical, hydraulic and gas-dynamic. Created and implemented automated settlement chains. With their help, digital modeling and analysis of the operation of all components is carried out to track technical parameters when making changes to the engine design.

General designer of the UEC Yuri Shmotin said:

Mathematical modeling allows us to reduce time and material costs for modernizing aircraft engines. Created at the Moscow enterprise «Salyut» The digital twin is intended for the development of design solutions for the modernization of the AI-222-25 and for the creation of its modification. Today we are working to improve the characteristics and resource indicators of the power plant.
