Although the company admits the problem

A manufacturing problem in some Honda HR-V vehicles can cause the rear window to spontaneously shatter, sending glass shards into both the interior and the road.

At this time, this issue has not resulted in a recall or formal investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, many owners have filed complaints about this problem on the NHTSA website.

Recently, the rear window in a 2023 Honda HR-V tested by Consumer Reports shattered while warming up one cold morning. Now the organization is calling for a recall to «help spread awareness and maximize the number of owners getting their cars repaired».

While the company is not issuing a recall, Honda told Carscoops that it is initiating a voluntary product update campaign to address the issue, which it says is related to a heater issue. The company is working to obtain replacement parts as soon as possible and plans to begin replacing windows in April or May 2024.

«Our investigation has shown that during the assembly process of some vehicles, the sealant used to secure the rear window may come into contact with the defroster heating elements, resulting in hot spots and over time& ;nbsp;to the weakening of glass», — Honda said in a statement.

Honda says owners whose rear window breaks due to the defroster can contact their nearest dealer or customer service to arrange possible repairs.
