Suspicious engines were also installed on the Infiniti QX50 and QX55
The US Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) announced an investigation into more than 450,000 Nissan vehicles due to reports of premature engine failure. Suspicious engines were installed on the Nissan Altima, produced from 2019 to 2023, and the Nissan Rogue (X-Trail) produced in 2021-2023. Potentially defective motors were also installed on the Infiniti QX50 crossover, released in 2019–2023, and QX55, released in 2022 and 2023.
Nissan confirmed ODI's investigation: «Nissan Group is committed to the safety of our customers and works closely with NHTSA [National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ] in conducting this investigation».
These cars are equipped with two engines: a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine. Both engines have a variable compression ratio and there is a suspicion that there may be problems with this system. During initial discussions with the automaker, it appears that Nissan is already working to resolve the potential issues.
ODI begins a preliminary investigation based on six reports of malfunctions: three occurred on the Nissan Rogue with a three-cylinder engine, two on Infiniti cars, one – on Altima. The Altima and Infiniti QX50/QX55 have a 2.0-liter engine. ODI reports mention loss of power and knocking. But a complete refusal was also recorded. If the engine fails while driving, it may be unsafe, so the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has joined the investigation.
