Weekly volume reached an all-time high of 1100 TB

The MTS operator has completed the main stage of modernization of the mobile communication network in the Moscow metro, ensuring continuous high-speed mobile Internet coverage of tunnels, lobbies and passages on all metro lines and stations. This was reported by the company's press service.

Thanks to infrastructure development, the average Internet speed in the MTS network in the capital’s metro increased by 40% year-on-year in December, and the volume of data transmission for 2023 increased by a third, exceeding three times the growth of mobile traffic in Moscow as a whole.

The network modernization included the phased laying of radiating cables in tunnels in the MTS area of responsibility and the installation of new equipment. As a result of work carried out over two years, MTS increased the length of its radiating cable to almost 200 km by the end of 2023 and installed about 700 additional base station units, including at 14 new metro stations opened this year on Bolshaya Koltsevaya, Solntsevskaya and Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya lines.

To achieve maximum data transfer rates, MTS engineers also combined all involved LTE frequency ranges 800/1800/2100/2600 MHz. As a result, the MTS network in the Moscow metro provides a maximum data transfer speed of up to 500 Mbit/s at stations and up to 250 Mbit/s in tunnels.

In December 2023, the weekly volume of data transfer on the MTS network in the Moscow metro reached a historical maximum of 1100 TB. This exceeds the weekly Internet traffic in million-plus cities such as Voronezh or Nizhny Novgorod, and even entire regions – for example, Smolensk, Kursk or Lipetsk regions.

Due to the expansion and modernization of the infrastructure, the quality of voice transmission has also improved – Voice traffic using VoLTE technology (voice over LTE) grew by almost 60% in 2023.
