The South Korean corporation is exploring new health monitoring features for its devices, including continuous measurement blood pressure and non-invasive glucometer.

Health monitoring is already a key selling point for smartphones and watches, with Samsung, Apple and Google using these features to attract and retain customers. An industry breakthrough could be sensors for continuous blood pressure monitoring and glucose monitoring (without needing to pierce the skin), the latter of which Apple has been developing for years and is currently in the “proof of concept” stage, according to recent reports.

“‎If we can measure blood pressure and glucose continuously, we will be in a completely different game,” says Hong Park, head of mobile digital health at Samsung. “We're making a significant investment in this.”

Park wouldn't comment on timing for any of the features, but based on the market as a whole, he says a non-invasive glucose meter could be available within the next 5 years.

“We're looking at everything from miniaturization to different technology platforms that can do some type of glucose monitoring or something in between,” he says.

Last week, Samsung announced the Galaxy Ring, a ring with health sensors that will monitor activity and sleep (with a bunch of other features). The product, according to Park, will be released before the end of 2024 in different colors and sizes.

“The ring is designed for people who want to monitor their health in a more convenient and less intrusive way,” said Park.

Samsung hasn't decided on pricing yet, but like the Galaxy Watch, the Ring likely won't be compatible with Apple's iPhone.

Samsung smartwatches have long offered the function of measuring blood pressure, but the process is not constant and requires calibration with a stand-alone meter. The company's current goal is to eliminate these limitations.

Apple, meanwhile, plans to add hypertension detection to its smartwatches later in 2024. At the same time, its expansion into medical technologies has not gone entirely smoothly – the company recently removed the blood oxygen detection function from the Apple Watch after a legal setback in a patent dispute with Masimo Corp.

Samsung is also exploring a number of different sensors for future versions of its headphones – including new ways to measure body temperature and heart rate.

Mixed reality headsets could also be a new frontier for health, Park said, particularly as it relates to meditation and mental health. Apple is set to release its first Vision Pro product in the US next week for $3,499, and Samsung appears to be looking for partners.
