Nvidia has released a new tool for modders called RTX Remix. It is a game remastering solution that allows you to transform older games using AI-powered texturing tools, ray tracing and Nvidia DLSS 3. This toolkit has already been used to visually update Portal and Half-Life 2.
Previously, access to Nvidia RTX Remix was limited, but now the toolkit is available to all interested modders as an open beta version. According to Nvidia, RTX Remix offers an application that allows modders to create lighting and bring updated assets into the game, as well as a runtime for “capturing classic game scenes and injecting updated assets back into the game during playback.”
One of the main features is a generative AI tool that uses the tensor cores of GeForce RTX GPUs to analyze low-resolution textures and “create physically accurate materials.” Then it increases the resolution up to 4 times. Modders can also use physics-based rendering to allow textures to properly “react” to ray-traced lighting. In addition, RTX Remix allows modders to implement ray tracing, DLSS 3, and Nvidia Reflex (which should reduce latency) into games for improved gameplay.
While these tools should make it easier for modders to remaster games, Nvidia notes that RTX Remix is not a one-button remastering solution, as some textures may appear too shiny or matte if assets are attached to them that have not been updated properly.
It is also noted that not every classic game is compatible with RTX Remix. Nvidia says the tool works best with DirectX 8 and 9 games “with fixed feature pipelines,” including Call of Duty 2, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Garry's Mod, Freedom Fighters, Need for Speed: Underground 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
