The Igor’s Lab website reported that Intel had discovered the root stability problems with 13th and 14th generation Core i9 processors (Raptor Lake) with unlocked overclocking. Intel has prepared an appropriate microcode patch, but told Tom’s Hardware that the update improves the effects, but does not solve the problem.
“Contrary to recent media reports, Intel has not confirmed the root cause and, together with its partners, continues to investigate user reports of instability issues with unlocked 13th and 14th generation Intel Core desktop processors (K/KF/KS). The microcode patch mentioned in the press reports fixes the eTVB bug that Intel discovered while investigating instability reports. While this issue potentially contributes to instability, it is not the root cause,” Intel said in a statement.
Igor’s Lab claimed to have received an internal document indicating that the root cause of the instability was “an incorrect value in the microcode algorithm associated with the eTVB function.” Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost is a feature that overclocks processor cores above their maximum frequency when certain conditions are met. The eTVB only starts working when there is sufficient power supply and TDP. eTVB technology is an exclusive feature of Intel Raptor Lake. It provides maximum acceleration in games and programs that require it, but, as new data suggests, leads to increased voltage on some components
Recall that in April it became known about a problem with the joint operation of Intel Core i9 13 and 14 K series chips with NVIDIA video cards, reports of which had been received since the beginning of the year. Motherboard manufacturers have added Intel Recommended Settings mode to the BIOS. However, the processor manufacturer called this mode incorrect and offered correct parameters. As you can see, these and further efforts by Intel and its partners improved the performance of processors, but did not lead to a final solution to the problem.
