Now large corporations are investing heavily in generative artificial intelligence and such models, like ChatGPT. A new study from the Reuters Institute and the University of Oxford shows that very few people are actually using artificial intelligence, despite the tremendous hype surrounding the technology.

The online survey of 12 thousand people in six countries (Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, UK, USA) focused on understanding whether people are using generative artificial intelligence and what they think about it application in journalism and other fields. Below are some of his results.

  • ChatGPT is the most recognized generative AI — about 50% of respondents had heard of it. It is also the most widely used generative AI tool in six countries. However, only 1% use ChatGPT daily in Japan, 2% in France and the UK, and 7% in the US. Many who claim to have used have only done so once or twice.
  • Although there is widespread awareness of generative AI in general, 20% to 30% of people have not heard of any of the most popular AI tools. Young people are more likely to use generative AI on a regular basis. On average across all six countries, 56% of people aged 18-24 have used ChatGPT at least once, compared to 16% of people aged 55 and over. 5% use generative AI to get the latest news.
  • A significant portion of the public believes that journalists are now using generative AI to perform certain tasks. 43% say they always or often use it to edit spelling and grammar, 29% to write headlines, and 27% to write article text.
  • When asked whether news generated primarily by artificial intelligence under human supervision should be labeled, the vast majority of respondents want at least some disclosure or labeling. Only 5% of our respondents say that none of the listed use cases need to be disclosed. About one-third think that editing an article's spelling and grammar (32%) and creating a title (35%) should be highlighted, and about half think that writing the text of an article (47%) and data analysis (47%) deserve a flag.
  • Most people expect generative artificial intelligence to have a major impact on almost every area of life within the next five years. From 51% expect a significant influence on politics, to 66% on the media and 66% on science.

Overall, most people expect generative AI to improve lives. When asked whether generative AI would make society as a whole better or worse, people were generally more pessimistic. Caveats regarding artificial intelligence largely focus on privacy and security.

Dr Richard Fletcher, the report's lead author, told the BBC there was a mismatch between the hype around AI and public interest in it: “A significant portion of the population is not particularly interested in generative artificial intelligence.”
