Tele2 was deprived of access to frequencies that were planned to be used for 5G

This decision was made by the State Commission on Radio Frequencies

Tele2 has not received the right to further access to frequencies for fixed wireless access in Yekaterinburg in the bands 24.549–25.249 GHz and 25.557–26.257 GHz.

According to the Kommersant publication, the company no longer used these frequencies, and their withdrawal may be related to the plans of the Ministry of Digital Development for conversion to introduce the new 5G communication standard in cities with a population of over a million. However, experts note that building a 5G network in this range requires additional costs, and this frequency band cannot be used as the main one.

The decision of the State Commission on Radio Frequencies (SCRF) dated December 27, 2023, published on the Ministry of Digital Development website on January 15, indicates that Tele2 was refused to renew the license to use the radio frequency band «based on the negative conclusion&raquo ;.

However, the decision does not indicate which frequencies and in which regions we are talking about. A Tele2 representative said that we are talking about 26 GHz frequencies in Yekaterinburg, intended for MDMS networks, but refused to clarify whether the company retained frequencies in other cities.

A source from a major telecom operator confirms that the SCRF decision refers to «fixed wireless access in the territory of Yekaterinburg in the bands 24.549–25.249 GHz and 25.557–26.257 GHz» .
