Samsung expects to begin production by 2026

Samsung decided to get involved in the race with Intel and also switch to using glass substrates in its chips.

Samsung subsidiary Electro-Mechanics has reportedly been tasked with starting R&D in this direction. At the same time, the company expects early success, including thanks to the developments of other divisions, including the display production division. As a result, the company expects to begin mass production of glass substrates by 2026.

This is quite fast, considering that the work is just beginning. For comparison, Intel showed such a development last summer, but noted that finished products will appear only in the second half of the current decade, that is, at best in the same 2026, but quite possibly much later.

Glass has distinctive properties such as ultra-low flatness and better thermal and mechanical stability, resulting in much higher interconnect density in the substrate. These features will enable the creation of high-density, high-performance chip packages and higher transistor densities. In particular, glass substrates will make it possible to pack more chiplets in a smaller area.
