From March 1, 2024, a ban on the popularization of VPN services and the dissemination of information about ways to bypass blocking will come into effect in the Russian Federation. This innovation provides for fines of up to 4 million rubles for the presence of prohibited materials and the possibility of blocking information. This was reported by Kommersant.

Various sites, including the 4PDA forum and the Skillfactory portal, have already begun to remove information about VPNs, including instructions for setting up a network and reviews of services for bypassing blocking.

The SecurityLab portal also removed some materials about VPN. Editor-in-Chief Alexander Antipov noted that compliance with the law is a priority for their publication. Automated content moderation systems have been introduced in accordance with the new rules.

According to the decree published on the website of draft regulatory legal acts, from March 1, 2024, Roskomnadzor will block the search engines for VPN services that violate the law or are blocked on the territory of the Russian Federation. Ekaterina Mizulina, head of the Safe Internet League, confirmed this tightening of the law, explaining that it is due to the large risks to the data security of users of VPN services.
