Working “calls” can become a little more fun, since they will take place in virtual space with avatars instead of regular images of colleagues.
Even as companies increasingly encourage employees to return to offices, Microsoft is offering a new type of “hybrid” work to try. The company announced the launch of Microsoft Mesh, a feature that works through Microsoft Teams and allows employee avatars to meet in the same virtual location, even if the actual people are in different locations.
At the same time, the VR experience in Teams does not require the use of a headset—Microsoft has built in a 2D version (in which case people appear as images from webcams). The company also uses spatial audio and sound zones, so multiple people can communicate simultaneously in the same space without disturbing each other. And it's great for more natural conversations that aren't always possible during video conferencing.
Microsoft has previously tested Mesh with companies including consulting firm Accenture and pharmaceutical Takeda, the latter's CTO said the meetings were “more intimate and immersive.”
Mesh offers a series of ready-made spaces that companies can customize (such as adding logos) – tools can be accessed through the Microsoft Unity platform for 2D and 3D development.
