Design documentation is currently being developed
According to Transmashholding, a prototype train powered by hydrogen fuel will appear in Russia no earlier than 2025. The company clarified that the active stage of development of design documentation is currently underway, which is being carried out by the TMH Engineering division.
In «Transmashholding» noted that a multi-unit passenger train is being developed that will be used in suburban services. Earlier, Russian Railways reported that the first hydrogen shunting locomotive will appear in Russia by 2026. Last fall, the General Director of «Transmashholding» mentioned that the creation of a hydrogen train is at a very early stage.
Tests of the hydrogen fuel train are planned to be carried out at a test site in the Sakhalin region. Back in 2019, Russian Railways, Rosatom, TMH and the authorities of the Sakhalin region signed an agreement on cooperation in the organization of railway communication using trains powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
