The UK Ministry of Defense has become the victim of a hacker attack. As a result, there was a massive leak of military data. The government has not identified the country involved in the attack, but Sky News reports it is China.
A cyber attack was carried out on the pay system of current military personnel and some veterans. The attack resulted in the disclosure of information primarily about names and bank details. Despite the attack, all salaries will be paid this month.
Tobias Ellwood, a Conservative MP and former military man, said China “probably looked at the financially vulnerable with the idea that they might be coerced in exchange for money.”
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “firmly opposes and combats all forms of cyber attacks” and “rejects the use of this issue for political purposes to discredit other countries.”
Defence Secretary Grant Shepps will make a statement to the House of Commons and outline a “multi-point plan” that will include action to protect injured service members. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense states that the affected military personnel will be provided with advice and support.
It is noted that the attack was carried out on a contractor’s system, which is not associated with the main computer systems of the Ministry of Defense. It was disabled and an investigation has now been launched to understand the extent of the hack. Investigations have not yet shown that the data was stolen.

Government minister Mel Stride said China was an “era-defining challenge” and “our eyes are wide open.” He did not confirm that China was involved in the hack, but said the UK must “get the balance right” when it comes to Beijing.
“By balance, I mean protecting our safety,” Stride added.
