Modern Apple has never done this

Apple has returned to the practice of licensing its operating system. For the first time in 30 years.

We're not talking about macOS or iOS, but about CarPlay. As it became known, the new generation CarPlay system involves distribution through licensing. This means that Apple is actually transferring control of the system to auto manufacturers. Modern Apple has never done anything like this.

Perhaps this means that there will be no such version of CarPlay on mass-produced cars. At least for now, the first to adopt the new system are Porsche and Aston Martin. Perhaps Apple believes that manufacturers of more expensive machines will work more carefully with the software and will not harm Apple's reputation with any defects.
