Yes, and not always in applications
Intel has already released new mobile processors Raptor Lake Refresh, and the Notebookcheck portal has already tested the flagship Core i9-14900HX.
The new product, let us remind you, is as similar as possible to the Core i9-13980HX, except that the frequency is increased from 5.6 to 5.8 GHz. In general, these are the same 24 cores as the desktop Core i9.
Accordingly, the performance increase of the new CPU relative to last year’s is minimal. For example, in Geekbench multi-threaded mode we are talking about 3–6%, and in Cinebench last year’s models are even a little faster. It’s also worth understanding that we are talking about laptops, so the result significantly depends on the cooling systems of each of the test models and power limit settings.
In addition, in Cinebench the new Intel CPU is not able to beat the Ryzen 9 7945HX.
When it comes to gaming performance, AMD processors are also often ahead, especially the unique Ryzen 9 7945HX3D with additional cache memory.
We should also evaluate the energy consumption. In terms of energy efficiency, Intel's new product is inferior to AMD's flagships, although the difference there is also insignificant. But the difference is very large if we evaluate the drop in performance when power is limited. The Intel flagship's score drops from 30,308 points in Cinebench R23 at 150 W to 18,258 points at 55 W, while the Ryzen 9 7945HX drops from 34,202 points at 130 W to 26,045 points at 55 W.
The authors conclude that the Core i9-14900HX — this is just a small update, which is exactly what it is.
