TikTok has started testing uploading long, hour-long videos, and YouTube is unlikely to like it .
The feature is available in a limited number of countries, but will not be widely available anytime soon, the company says (via TechCrunch).
The update was first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra — and it symbolizes a departure from TikTok's traditional positioning as a short-form video platform. Previously, other media giants tried to adopt the format of the social network – YouTube launched Shorts, and Meta added Reels to Instagram.
TikTok originally offered 15-second videos for upload, but has expanded the format somewhat in recent years. Videos lasting up to an hour, according to the company, will allow for the creation of multi-part stories, or provide more time for various master classes, comedy sketches or even extended episodes of TV shows (last year, the American streaming service Peacock added the debut episode of the sitcom “Killing It” to the platform “- however, it had to be divided into five parts)
Many networks are uploading the first episodes of shows to YouTube to attract new users to their platforms – now Google's video platform may have a worthy competitor with a huge audience.
At the same time, the social network, which belongs to the Chinese ByteDance, is now having big problems in the United States – the authorities may ban the application if the local owner does not purchase it.
