WhatsApp appears to be working on a feature that will allow people to share files on devices next to each other.
As WABetaInfo reports, the beta version (2.24.2.20) of WhatsApp for Android has a file sharing feature that works on nearby devices. Both participants in the exchange must open the People Nearby screen. If users do not have the other person's phone number in their phone book, their devices will not be visible to each other.
To create a sharing request, one of the two people wanting to share files wirelessly must open the People Nearby screen and shake their device, reports SamMobile. This is reminiscent of an iPhone file-sharing app called Bump that was popular in 2011, as well as Monobank's method for transferring funds. Apparently, we are talking about support for files up to 2 GB in size. This feature is still being tested and may be released to WhatsApp users later this year.
It looks like this file sharing method can only be useful when sharing files between Android and iPhone devices. Otherwise, native file sharing methods on Android (Quick Share) and iOS (AirDrop) are easier and faster to use.
