Microsoft is probably considering adding Copilot AI to Windows 11 startup – according at least this is one of the most noticeable changes in the new build of Windows 11 23615 (in the Dev channel), which has been available to testers since yesterday.
At this stage, autoplay of Copilot's much-hyped AI assistant is being tested on “widescreen devices” to gather feedback and gauge perception among users before deciding on a wider launch.
New Copilot autorun option
Microsoft isn't specific about which “widescreen devices” they're talking about, but Windows 11 Settings does note that Copilot will automatically open “when using widescreen screens.” This likely only applies to ultra-wide monitors and less traditional resolutions, but we'll have to wait for Microsoft's clearer clarification (if any) to know for sure.
This is clearly another way for Microsoft to promote its own AI products that will likely draw a lot of criticism from Windows users, and potentially another “How to turn it off” thing if Microsoft eventually decides to change. In general, this approach is very much in the Microsoft style – just remember the aggressive promotion of Microsoft Edge in Windows 11, which automatically launches instead of the default browser when using Windows Widgets or the Windows Search function.
In general, this change to Copilot fits neatly into Microsoft's overall AI efforts, including the recent addition of a new Copilot key on Windows keyboards (it will be pushed closer to the right Alt instead of the Menu key). The first laptops with the Copilot button have already been announced by Acer and Dell, and more are expected soon. Microsoft also intends to offer more customization options for Copilot in Windows – recently one of the Twitter/X users drew attention to the unannounced Chat Providers option, which hints at the possibility of opening Copilot in Windows to third-party plugins or chat bots. In the future, it's likely that even Notepad in Windows 11 will have its own ChatGPT/Copilot AI if the experimental Cowriter feature makes it to release.
Yesterday, Microsoft briefly became the most valuable company in the world, unseating Apple for the first time since 2021 – its shares have been steadily rising for a long time amid successes in the field of artificial intelligence.
