And travel up to 450 km without recharging
According to the German magazine Car and Sports, the Volkswagen ID.2 electric car, costing 25,000 euros, will be released in May 2026, and not in 2025, as previously planned. There is also the option that the production ID.2 could still be launched in 2025, but only in small quantities.
According to reports, the reason for the changes is that, on the one hand, the EU has agreed not to update the existing exhaust emission limits for Euro 6 vehicles. On the other hand, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer said that the decision was aimed at cutting costs.
Schaefer added that the company had excess capacity after a drop in new orders last year. «If new vehicle sales exceed expectations, additional demand can be met by increasing production shifts».
In addition, under stricter Euro 7 emissions standards, European automakers will no longer be able to make a profit from fuel-powered vehicles by the end of this decade.
This is a car with a range of 450 km (WLTP) and the first front-wheel drive model on Volkswagen's modular electric platform MEB. The car will support fast charging with a power of 125 kW, which will charge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes (this is a record in this class). The new car will be equipped with a 223 hp front engine and will be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h.
