Toyota issued a formal order «Do not drive» for owners of older Toyota Corolla (2003 and 2004), Corolla Matrix (2003 and 2004) and Toyota RAV4 (2004 and 2005) in the USA.
The problem with these machines – in the infamous Takata airbags. It turned out that during a large recall of 67 million cars in the United States, some of the cars were not repaired. And now a regulation has been issued for these machines. Genera issued a similar warning; Motors for owners of approximately 11 thousand Pontiac Vibes produced in 2003 and 2004 (Corolla Matrix and Pontiac Vibe – are one model).
Due to long-term temperature fluctuations, the flammable material of the fuse may cause the gas generator to explode during airbag deployment, causing plastic fragments to injure a person. In fact, this is what makes the cars dangerous, which is why Toyota and GM have asked owners, if possible, not to drive until the cars are repaired.
The RAV4 will reportedly have the driver's side airbag replaced, while the Corolla and Corolla Matrix – passenger side airbag.
The gas generator explosion caused 26 deaths in the United States, five of them occurred in 2022.
