This time there will be no further increase in chip prices? Nvidia and TSMC say that yesterday's earthquake in Taiwan did not affect production

The TSMC plant was almost undamaged

Yesterday, Taiwan experienced the strongest earthquake for the island in 25 years with a magnitude of 7.2-7.4. Among other things, one of the TSMC factories stopped its work, which, as expected, could greatly affect the price of various chips. However, it seems that this time there will be no increase in price.

Nvidia said the earthquake did not affect its supply chain, although the company is one of TSMC's largest customers.

After consultation with our manufacturing partners, we do not expect any impact on our supply due to the Taiwan earthquake

The fact is that TSMC facilities were practically not damaged, and the company resumed work after 10 hours.

Based on TSMC's rich experience and capabilities in earthquake response and disaster prevention, as well as regular safety drills to ensure full preparedness, just 10 hours after the earthquake, the recovery rate of wafer manufacturing equipment exceeded 70 %, and the recovery rate of new plants (such as Fab 18) exceeded 80%. Although several pieces of equipment were damaged in some areas, affecting production lines, the main machines, including all extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment, remained undamaged
