He was spotted in tests
The first Mercedes model on the AMG.EA platform is seen testing. This sports sedan was developed from the very beginning exclusively as an electric car to replace the current AMG 4-door coupe. The latter has already received a hybrid version, but its successor will abandon the internal combustion engine altogether and switch to a pure platform.
Judging by the smooth shape of the rear of the prototype, we are talking about a liftback body. The previous model is a five-door hatchback. A closer look at these official teaser images reveals an active rear spoiler. The production version should have a lot in common with the 2022 Vision AMG concept.
The car will use disc electric motors with «an unprecedented combination of power density, size and weight» compared to traditional cylindrical motors. One engine can produce 480 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque while weighing only 24 kg.
In addition to the new engines, the AMG.EA-based model is expected to use a thinner battery with 40% more energy density. The special architecture should also provide a more spacious cabin without having to make the compromises associated with ICE vehicles adapted for EV operation. This will be possible by lengthening the wheelbase and shortening the front and rear overhangs.
The electric sports car is being tested on a frozen lake in Sweden before heading to other parts of the world for more testing. The official presentation could take place in late 2024 or early 2025.
