Jack Sweeney, who drew the ire of celebrities and billionaires by creating accounts that track their private flights may face legal action again.
According to The Washington Post, in December, Taylor Swift's lawyers sent the student a letter threatening legal action and demanding that he stop publishing social media posts about the singer's flights. The statement said such actions cause “direct and irreparable harm, as well as emotional and physical suffering.”
“I think it’s important to note that I have no intention of causing harm. I actually think Swift has some good songs. And I believe in transparency and public information,” Sweeney said in a comment to The Verge.
Acts are actually posting information that is already publicly available – through the Federal Aviation Administration and signals broadcast by private jets. In fact, Sweeney only made it easier to access them by creating separate accounts on social networks.
In addition to data on private jet takeoffs and landings, Sweeney estimates and publishes how much fuel they used and how much greenhouse gases they emitted. Last year, Taylor Swift topped a list of celebrities with the highest CO2 emissions from private jets.
“Taylor's plane is regularly loaned to other people. It is clearly incorrect to attribute most or all of these flights to her,” the singer’s representatives responded then.
Sweeney, meanwhile, says Swift's team's statements contradict each other and are “very reminiscent” of Elon Musk's December 2022 lawsuit. The guy moved from Twitter to Threads after the billionaire banned him from the platform and accused him of posting “coordinates for murder.” In late 2022, Sweeney returned to X with an account that shares details of Musk's private jet, but with a 24-hour delay.
