Hiromi Wakai, vice president of product management at PlayStation, spoke in an interview about the reasons for the release of a console for streaming games, and not a full-fledged gaming device.
Portal's roots lie in the PlayStation 3 Remote, which the company released in 2006. Gamers could stream games from PS3, PS4 and PS5 consoles using various devices, including PlayStation Portable, PC, smartphones and tablets.
But since then, no game has been created system that can take full advantage of the technology, even as Remote Play usage continues to grow.
“The original idea for PlayStation Portal came from Our goal is to provide gamers with the opportunity to play high-quality console games. We believed that we could achieve this goal affordably by using a solution often called a “thin client” (a system in which most processes are performed on servers rather than on local hardware), while retaining all the functionality of the DualSense wireless controller and screen , capable of displaying content with clear images and text.”
Hiroi Wakai said that the idea for PlayStation Portal belonged to Hideaki Nishino, head of Sony PlayStation Experience Group. The company didn't want to ask the development teams to do extra work to create games specifically for the new gaming device. Therefore, they decided to create a console that would be used exclusively with the PS5:
Wakai added that Portal was never intended to be a real console:
“The initial discussion for this product began as a question of how to expand the console gaming experience on PS5, rather than releasing a standalone handheld device.”< /p>
