Approximately 900 people will lose their jobs at PlayStation, representing approximately eight percent of their workforce. This is not a total surprise given the ongoing trend of mass layoffs in tech and gaming.
What is known
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO Jim Ryan explained the changes as necessary to grow the business and ensure the company's long-term sustainability. The layoffs will affect several PlayStation studios, including Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games and Guerrilla Games, and will have an impact on the development of some projects.
Although the layoff decision was not final, a number of studios around the world, including the Dutch Guerrilla Games and British studios, are under threat. It is noted that staff reductions are aimed at “optimizing PlayStation resources” and ensuring the company’s continued success.

The studio was acquired just a few years ago, and yet Sony is now announcing that they will be laying off my colleagues for no other reason than “financial.”

Employees affected by these layoffs will receive severance pay, and a career support program will be introduced for workers in Japan. The PlayStation layoffs are part of a larger trend of mass layoffs in gaming. This year alone, more than 6,500 people who worked in this industry have already lost their jobs.
