Google has changed its mind about limiting the availability of its artificial intelligence Gemini Nano only to the top-end smartphone Pixel 8 Pro. Gemini Nano will still be released on the regular Pixel 8.
Pixel 8 will receive this AI as a developer preview in the next Pixel Feature Drop. The model will be responsible for two functions: smart reply in Gboard and summaries in the Recorder app. That is, these AI functions will run locally on the smartphone.
Recall that initially Google said that Gemini Nano would only receive the Pixel 8 Pro, and this was allegedly due to technical limitations. It probably all came down to the amount of RAM, because the Pixel 8 has 8 GB, which is not much for AI, while the Pixel 8 Pro already has 12 GB. But the company was able to solve the problems, which will clearly please Pixel 8 owners.
By the way, the Pixel 8a, according to some reports, can also get 8 GB of RAM, and its platform will be the same as the Pixel 8. Therefore, technically, the Pixel 8a will also be able to run Gemini Nano, but Whether Google will implement this is anyone's guess.
