NVIDIA has been working on adding generative AI to non-player characters (NPCs) for some time now ). During the Game Developers Conference, she showed how developers can use her “digital human” AI tools to voice, animate, and create dialogue for video game characters.

NVIDIA also hopes that its recently announced partnership with Ubisoft will speed up the development of this technology and eventually bring these AI-controlled NPCs to modern games. Ubisoft helped create new “NEO NPCs” using NVIDIA's Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) technology and with dynamic NPC experts from gaming startup Inworld AI. As a result, it was possible to create non-player characters capable of communicating in a variety of ways, rather than repeating a limited list of pre-prepared phrases over and over again, ignoring the surrounding game environment.

These NEO NPCs not only communicate differently. They interact in real time with players, the environment, and other game characters. NVIDIA says this opens up “new opportunities to tell new stories.” As a proof of concept, Ubisoft's writing team created complete backgrounds, knowledge bases, and conversation styles for two NPCs to demonstrate the technology's capabilities.

These are carefully developed characters with “awareness of environment and context” as well as conversational memory. NVIDIA says each character is characterized by “collaboration and strategic decision-making.” The company also leveraged its Audio2Face technology to provide appropriate facial animations and lip syncing during atypical conversations. NVIDIA proposes that these characters push “the boundaries of game design and immersion.”

The company hasn't directly announced that this technology will be coming to Ubisoft games anytime soon, but you can be sure that it's on its roadmap.
