Microsoft is making a big push to bring AI to laptops. The company introduced a new brand, Copilot+ PC ─ PC with Copilot+. It is intended to highlight that Windows laptops have built-in hardware resources to handle AI tasks and support AI functions in the operating system.
AI functions will be possible thanks to the neural processor that is included in the laptops. One of the main features it will provide is Recall. It's supposed to use artificial intelligence to create a “photographic memory” with the ability to search for everything you've done and seen on your PC. The laptops will run more than 40 artificial intelligence models as part of Windows 11 to power these new features. Microsoft's built-in AI assistant, Copilot, will also support the GPT-4o model.
Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's Windows executive, said the new laptops will be “58% faster” than the M3-powered MacBook Air and have “all day” battery life. Microsoft expects 50 million Copilot+ PC branded laptops to be sold over the next year.
Copilot+ PC has certain hardware requirements. They must have an NPU unit, at least 16 GB of RAM and an SSD with a capacity of at least 256 GB. Arm versions based on Qualcomm processors should provide up to 15 hours of battery life while surfing the web.
Such systems will be offered by Microsoft itself as part of the Surface line, and they will also be released by key partners such as Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Acer and Asus. While the company is making a big push to bring Arm chips to Windows laptops, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said laptops with Intel and AMD chips will also have these AI features.
Microsoft sees these devices as the beginning of a new era of Windows laptops. The move to Arm-based chips could significantly improve battery life on such laptops. And new artificial intelligence functions are designed to run on processor hardware resources. Those are two big bets on untested hardware and software. If they work, they could be a transformative change for Windows laptops.
