The service will become available after the launch of the Russian satellite constellation

Minister of Digital Development of the Russian Federation Maksut Shadayev, on the sidelines of the CIPR-2024 conference, which is taking place in Nizhny Novgorod, announced that Wi-Fi on board Russian aircraft will become available everywhere, most likely from 2028. This will happen when the Russian satellite constellation is launched. Earlier, Shadayev noted that the first constellation of Russian space communication satellites for use in a highly elliptical orbit will be formed in 2026, and by 2030 it is planned to launch 737 low-orbit satellites.

According to Roscosmos, the «Skif» based on 12 satellites will provide broadband Internet access from a medium orbit at an altitude of 8,070 km. Four spacecraft «Express-RV» will allow the provision of communication services, including broadband Internet access, from a highly elliptical orbit (40,000 km). And the «Marathon-IoT» system based on 264 small satellites in low orbit 750 km is required for the Internet of Things. All these orbital constellations are being created within the framework of the federal project «Sfera».
