The Famitsu portal published data on sales of games on physical media over the past week. Topping the list is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but it's off to a weaker start than Final Fantasy XVI.
It's no surprise that a Square Enix game took first place. Rebirth sold 262,656 copies. This is more than 70,000 less than FF XVI. As for Final Fantasy VII Remake, this part sold 702,000 copies in its first week. But don't forget that it was a pandemic, and there were almost twice as many PS4 consoles on the Japanese market at that time as there are PS5 consoles now. But that's not to say that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sold poorly. Digital releases are gaining traction and could play an important role in the overall result.
Still, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth posted the second-best showing in Japan among PS5 releases. Only Final Fantasy XVI was higher.
