The Yandex team announced a new achievement in the project for the development of neural networks that recognize text. In «Search through archives» added a new document type — reference books from the collections of the National Electronic Library and the Russian State Library.
The Yandex neural network deciphered almost 600 books or 275 thousand pages with addresses, lists of government officials and information about real estate. Historians, sociologists, demographers and journalists will be able to access new information about historical events and personalities, and ordinary people — learn even more about your ancestors.
In new sources in «Archive Search» You can find biographical facts that were previously only available in paper form. For example, memorial books contain lists of key people in provinces with their positions. From address books you can find out where they lived, and from trade and industrial directories — what kind of business they were doing. Historians, art historians and other specialists may also be interested in advertisements from past centuries placed in such documents. In addition, the directories contain information about regions that were not previously represented in the «Archive Search», for example: about St. Petersburg, Oryol, Voronezh and Kaluga provinces.
