In versions of Microsoft Office that were released between 1997 and 2004, it was used digital assistant Clippy in the form of a paper clip. The company subsequently abandoned it with the release of Office 2007, although there have since been attempts to revive Clippy in various reincarnations: in Microsoft Teams, on “ugly” Christmas sweaters, and as a money clip. Now it's time for a new attempt to revive Clippy — as part of a third-party open source utility called Winpilot.
Winpilot is designed to remove viruses, disable annoying default UI options, and remove ads from Windows 11. It has been around since 2023, but was then called BloatyNosy. The new version 2024.5.6 added the Tiny11builder utility, which creates a minified Windows 11 installation ISO image. Other features include the ability to turn off personalized ads, restore the full context menu, clear pre-loaded software, and turn off Bing Cloud content search.
Clippy appears in Winpilot to help the user navigate the various functions of the application. The Clippy tooltip is located above the app's user interface. When you first launch Winpilot and interact with Clippy, it gives you the option to ask questions and offers two suggestions, such as checking your Windows version or “Fix my system.”
If the user has not asked anything yet or clicked on the tooltip, they will receive a random suggestion or comment from Clippy. When you perform a specific action, such as uninstalling software, the operation status and confirmation will appear instead of the Clippy comment at the bottom of the tooltip.
The developer of Winpilot did not create the Clippy functionality himself, but used code from another open source project called Clippy from FireCube. Unlike Winpilot, FireCube allows you to place Clippy directly on the Windows 11 desktop and connect it to GPT 3.5 (using an API key) so users can use it like a real AI chatbot.
