US accuses suspected member of Russian smuggling network of using AirTags to stalk ex-wife , 404 Media reports based on the newly revealed indictment. Citizen of Tajikistan Ibodullo Numanovich Mukhiddinov is suspected of illegally transporting his now ex-wife (identified in the case as S.K.) to the United States through the network for which he worked, bullying and harassment.
“Soon after their marriage, Defendant began physically and emotionally abusing S.K. and forced him to record sexually explicit videos. The Defendant threatened to release the images and videos if S.K. did not comply with the Defendant's demands. At the time of the marriage, S.K. had recently arrived from Tajikistan via Mexico and had no other family or support in the United States.”
Over the course of several weeks in March and April, Mukhiddinov placed seven AirTags on S.K.’s car. She found the first tag, the other six were found by investigators. The investigation alleges that Mukhiddinov placed AirTags on S.K.'s car to monitor her and hid them throughout the vehicle, including under the front bumper, in the wheels, inside the frame and in the side mirrors.
When investigators learned that Mukhiddinov was putting tags on the car, the FBI used it to watch him check the tags or place others. In one case, after the FBI disabled the AirTag he had installed, Mukhiddinov called S.K. and followed her to a car wash, then knocked on her windows and demanded to know why S.K. was not answering his calls. “WITH. K. was paralyzed by fear caused by the actions of the Defendant,” the protocol says. The FBI deactivated the AirTag and watched as Mukhiddinov arrived, exited his vehicle with his phone, and began searching for the AirTag. Investigators obtained Apple records that linked Mukhiddinov's account to AirTag.
This isn't the first time AirTags have become a tool for stalkers and domestic abusers since launching in 2021. Police records show that this has become a problem for women. There have been several cases where AirTag stalking has turned violent, in at least two of which it resulted in the stalker killing the target.
After charging Mukhiddinov and executing a search warrant, investigators found a folder on his phone with approximately 140 photographs and videos of S.K. of a sexual nature. The motion for pretrial detention states that the defendant has access to significant financial resources and is believed to be involved in a large-scale human smuggling ring by a transnational organized crime network. The judge granted the motion, and the jury trial is scheduled to begin June 8.
