Microsoft recently closed a security gap in the Windows Wi-Fi driver. The exploit would allow attackers to run malicious code on vulnerable systems over Wi-Fi. The vulnerability affects Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as all versions of Windows Server starting from 2008. To use it, an attacker does not need to have access to the target computer.
The company says there were virtually no known active exploits for this vulnerability, but the attack is fairly low-tech and rated “Important.” An attacker only needs to be within range of a computer's Wi-Fi to send a specially crafted network packet to the target computer and exploit the vulnerability.
A Wi-Fi attack bypasses all authentication protocols, requires no prior access rights, and requires no user interaction at all. Therefore, an attacker could plant malicious software on Windows users who are connected to public Wi-Fi networks completely undetected – in hotels, airports, cafes, and the like. Or, for example, just approach the victim’s house.
The vulnerability has now been resolved, but requires the Windows Update for Tuesday, June 11th. However, almost certainly not everyone has updated, and such announcements can provoke attackers. The ease with which an exploit can be used also causes problems. The patch also addresses other vulnerabilities, including one that could allow remote unauthenticated attackers to run malicious code with elevated privileges.
