Tuesday marked 35 years since the famous mathematician Tim Berners-Lee presented his vision of what would become known as the World Wide Web. At the same time, Akamai Chief Technology Officer Robert Blumoff believes that after breakthrough and development, the Internet is now in a state of stagnation.
“The next 35 years could be a wild disappointment,” Blumoff told CNBC last week.
He compared the current state of the Internet to the aerospace industry of the 1970s, where innovation stalled after the Boeing 747 and the first moon landing.
“This was all in the 60s and 70s,” Blumoff noted. “If anyone went to sleep in 1975 and then woke up and looked at the aerospace industry today, they would be incredibly disappointed.”
Blumoff says it's possible the world is moving in the same direction with telecommunications.
“We may have reached the end of the steep innovation curve,” he said. “Perhaps this curve has passed us by. We may be heading towards a plateau. Moore's law does not apply.”
The only thing Blumof sees development in today is AI. According to him, the technology can achieve significant advances in the next decade with the advent of generative algorithms. Even then, however, AI may have to take a step back before leaping forward.
At the same time, Blumof also mentions the dangers of AI models, in particular with regard to copyright infringement.
