The company is going through far from the best of times after the developers of the Unity solution did not receive a positive response from charging them an additional commission

The Reuters news agency managed to obtain internal correspondence from Unity Software, from which it became known about the company's intentions to carry out the most massive layoff in its history, sending 1,800 people, or 25% of the entire staff, to the labor exchange.

A wave of layoffs will sweep through absolutely all teams and affect all offices of the company. The reduction is expected to be completed by March 2024.

Back in November 2023, Unity announced plans to completely overhaul its approach to business, closing several offices and curtailing support for some products. The decision was made in the wake of a scandal due to a new business model, according to which the company planned to take an additional commission from developers depending on the number of installations.

For some reason, many developers did not want to pay more and called for a boycott of the Unity engine, after which the company was forced to reconsider the controversial business model.
