Also introduced a new 1.5-liter engine
Toyota, in collaboration with Subaru and Mazda, introduced new gasoline engines that were much more compact than their predecessors.
«We will focus on optimizing their [new motors] and integrating with electric motors, batteries  ;and other electric drives», — said in a joint statement of the three companies. In other words, the new engines are designed with a view to being used as part of hybrid power plants. And they can be used not only by Toyota itself, but also by Subaru (Toyota owns a fifth of Subaru shares) and Mazda (Toyota — holder of 5% of Mazda shares).
All specifications are not yet available, but the company notes that the 1.5-liter engine is 10% more compact and lighter than its predecessor (the 1.5-liter Yaris engine). The 2.0-liter turbo engine has also become more compact and lighter, and will replace the 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.
It has not yet been announced when the new engines will appear under the hood of production cars.
