BMW plans to launch its latest 5 Series/i5 models in China on January 25, offering potential buyers changes in design, technology and powertrains.
The line-up will include ten models, six of which are for the extended-wheelbase 5 Series, and four — for i5. The new line will also be released in the US and European markets early this year.
The 5 Series for the Chinese market is assembled domestically by a joint venture between BMW and Brilliance. This joint venture was founded in 2003 and began assembling 3rd and 5th series cars. The BMW-Brilliance cooperation owns two factories in China with a planned production capacity of up to 650,000 units. BMW-Brilliance currently assembles nine models: 3 Series, i3, 5 Series, i5, iX1, X1, iX3, X3 and X5L.
The new BMW 5 Series received a signature radiator grille and headlights «angel eyes» with boomerang-shaped daytime running lights. Actual images of the long wheelbase version show a longer profile with classic curves and chrome accents, as well as an illuminated «5» badge. The dimensions of the new model are 5175 mm in length, 1900 mm in width and 1520 mm in height, the wheelbase is 3105 mm.
The center console houses a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch central display. The lower-cut steering wheel provides a comfortable grip, while the crystal-like interior components add to the luxurious feel. The long-wheelbase version of the 5 Series features a drop-down 31-inch 8K screen with an aspect ratio of 32:9 with access to the Huawei AppGallery.
Six petrol long-wheelbase versions will be available in China:
- 525Li Luxury Package;
- 525Li M Sport Package;
- 530Li Flagship Model M Luxury Package;
- 530Li Flagship Model M Sport Package;
- 530Li Exclusive Model Luxury Package;
- 530Li Exclusive Model M Sport Package.
Engine options range from a low-power 2 l 212 hp engine. the 525Li has an engine of the same volume, but with a power of 287 hp, and the 530Li. All models are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Electric models:
- i5 eDrive35L Luxury Package;
- i5 eDrive35L M Sport Package;
- i5 eDrive35L Exclusive Model Luxury Package;
- i5 eDrive35L Exclusive Model M Sport Package.
With a rear-mounted single electric motor, the i5 boasts a maximum power output of 250 kW (335 hp) and a CLTC range of up to 567 kilometers.
Previously it became known that the new generation BMW 5 Series 540i will not be available in the Chinese market and the European market, but deliveries will continue in the USA.
