She will debut in Nio ET9
The production version of the 900V electric drive system (EDS) called «Thunder» (Thunder) came off the production line. This event conveniently coincided with the release of Nio's millionth EDS. The upcoming Nio ET9 will be the brand's first car to be equipped with Thunder EDS.
The electric motors integrated into this electric drive system on the front and rear axles are 30% lighter and their longitudinal dimension has been reduced by 280 mm. Reduced weight reduces vehicle energy consumption, and small size increases interior space.
The ET9 uses the world's first 925V W-Pin permanent magnet synchronous motor with a peak power output of 340kW. At the same time, it weighs only 79 kg, which provides a specific power of 4.3 kW/kg. The front axle of the ET9 is equipped with an asynchronous induction motor with a peak power of 180 kW. Its specific power is 2.6 kW/kg. Nio says this is the world's highest power density among induction motors.
Thunder EDS 900V uses a 1200V silicon carbide power module with a power density of 1315kW/L and can withstand over 300,000 cycles. Finally, the Thunder EDS features an updated liquid cooling system that increases the engine's peak continuous power by 30%.
As already mentioned, the first car to receive such a transmission will be the Nio ET9.
