OpenAI banned the developer of an artificial intelligence bot imitating a Democratic presidential candidate USA by Dean Phillips (pictured by Reuters above). This is ChatGPT's first response to what it sees as abuse of its AI tools in a political campaign.
Chatbot Dean.Bot was created by entrepreneurs Matt Krisiloff and Jed Somers in support of Phillips ahead of the New Hampshire primary, with financial support from hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, an activist and billionaire. The bot was based on the GPT language model from OpenAI.
The authors of the idea signed a contract with artificial intelligence startup Delphi to create the bot. OpenAI suspended Delphi's account and noted that OpenAI rules prohibit the use of its technology in political campaigns. Delphi liquidated Dean.Bot after account suspension.
“Anyone who creates with our tools must adhere to our usage policy. We recently removed the account of a developer who knowingly violated our API guidelines prohibiting political campaigning or impersonation of consent,” OpenAI spokeswoman Lindsay Held.
The bot came with a warning that it was an artificial intelligence tool, not the real Dean Phillips, and required voter consent to use it. But such technology can cause people to mistake such a tool for a person, even if there are warnings.
Proponents of this type of campaigning argue that bots, if used properly, can educate voters by providing a fun way to learn more about a candidate.
