Worse only in Southeast Asia
The United States has been pursuing a strategy for several years to build new factories on its territory for the production of semiconductors and more. It turned out that the USA has one of the longest construction times for such facilities.
CSET researchers assessed the construction processes of more than 600 factories around the world between 1990 and 2020. This did not only apply to semiconductor factories.
It turned out that the average time between the start of construction and the start of production was 682 days. Only in the case of the United States this figure was 736 days, which is one of the worst indicators. Longer only in Southeast Asia — 781 days. At the same time, Japan, for comparison, is much faster — on average 584 days.
Moreover, this is exactly the average for 30 years. But if you look more specifically, it turns out that now in the USA everything is even worse. In the period from 1990 to 2000, the average period was 675 days, and already in the 2010s the figure increased to a whopping 918 days!
The reason for this situation in the US is the confusing and complex regulatory policies, and the CHIPS Act passed some time ago did not improve the situation much.
